Meganisi – the inhabited island of the Princely Islands
Meganisi is the largest island of the Princely Islands cluster, in the bay of Lefkada. Unlike neighboring islets such as Skorpios and Madouri, which remain uninhabited or have limited human intervention, Meganisi maintains an authentic and timeless character.
With a history of permanent habitation since ancient times and a natural environment of exceptional beauty, the island combines tranquility with vibrant tradition. Its villages retain a strong identity and serve as the ideal starting point to explore this unique Ionian landscape.
Here is a brief presentation of the three settlements of Meganisi: the seaside Vathy, the central Katomeri, and the amphitheatrical Spartochori.
Vathy
Vathy is the most well-known and bustling village of Meganisi, as it is the main port of the island. It is named after the deep bay of the village, which offers natural protection to ships. It is renowned for its picturesque setting, with the beautiful bay surrounded by green slopes and tranquil waters hosting sailing and fishing boats. It is a meeting point for both locals and visitors, who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and authentic hospitality.
It is full of life, especially during the summer months. The seaside taverns and cafes offer wonderful flavors and views of the harbor, while the village retains its traditional character, with small shops and narrow streets. Here you can try fresh seafood, such as octopus and catch of the day, as well as local dishes that highlight the Ionian cuisine.
